About Citzalia

What is Citzalia?

Citzalia is democracy in action. It is an animated social networking platform that captures the essence of the European Parliament.

Citzalia is a world you inhabit and help create. Equipped with nothing more than your Web browser, you can create an avatar which you use to walk around, interact, network and debate the issues of today in the corridors of the European Parliament and contribute to a vibrant virtual community. By contributing to the discussions and adding content, participants accumulate experience points which appear on their profiles.

Citzalia is a means of understanding how the EU’s democratically elected Parliament works. Through participating in debates and writing articles – not to mention drafting virtual legislation – on issues relating to the European Parliament and EU policy, you will gain insight into and expertise on how democracy works in the EU.

This interactive platform is an opportunity to hear how fellow citizens feel about current issues and about the role of the European Parliament. Official information will be available side by side with discussion forums. The platform will be available in all 23 official languages of the EU.

Citzalia is here to help you understand the European Parliament and get closer to the decision-making process. It has the tools and the facts you need to join in the European debate. It is a fun and simple-to-use online platform where you can meet other Europeans, EU experts and you might even bump into an MEP! It is a place to share your opinions and discuss the issues that you care about.

The world of Citzalia

Citzalia recreates parts of the various buildings of the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg. Citzalia has many areas for your avatar to explore:

  • The Citizens’ Agora is a general discussion forum about the workings of the European Parliament and of the European Union in general.
  • The Press Room features news and views on current events and issues. Got a story to tell? Report it here and it could be published in Citzalia’s electronic newspaper. You can also vote on content and gain experience points.
  • EU Lex Lab is an activity offering a stimulating simulation of the legislative process. You can even propose legislation yourself and experience how laws are passed at EU level.
  • The Exhibition Hall is a space where virtual exhibitions are held.
  • The Education Corner provides space for young people with dedicated content for teachers as well.
  • The Library is a database of all archived content published by the community.

All applications within Citzalia are built on an open development framework, allowing third parties to add functionalities to enrich user experience. Citzalia will continually evolve and will be user-driven, so it is up to you to make it a platform to enrich European debate.

  11. [...] [...]
